    Sometimes, growing climbing fruits isn’t all about saving space. Climbing plants on pergolas or trellises add colour, shade and privacy to any garden as well as providing insulation from noise and wind.

    In our second instalment we look at three natural climbers: exotic dragon fruit, popular indoor plant Monstera and giant granadilla, a relative of passionfruit.

    DRAGON FRUIT OR PITAYA, HYLOCEREUS SPP. AND SELENICEREUS SPP.

    Dragon fruit is a hardy, thick-stemmed climbing cactus that produces the most amazing flowers, which then turn into the most amazing fruit. Pitaya is a common name for a number of warm-climate fruiting cacti that happen to be in the same genus. Both above-mentioned genera originate in southwestern USA and Mexico all the way down to Peru and Argentina.

    Their natural habit is to grow up trees and throughout the branches. Dragon fruit are now found naturalised in places
