HUNTER
As a 15-year old with the ink drying on a professional contract to an Australian factory team, Hunter Lawrence packed his bags and headed across the world in search of a career on the world stage. With the blessing from the Yamaha team, a team he had a long relationship with, Hunter signed with the Factory Suzuki team in the MX2 class of the World Motocross Championship. A stand-out performance at the Motocross of Nations in Matterley Basin attracted the attention of the Geico Honda team in the USA. After a further year in Europe with a satellite Honda team, and with support from the US-based Geico team as a transition to the US, Lawrence and his family packed their bags again to set up in the USA. So far, Hunter has impressed, picking up moto victories but hampered by unfortunate injuries. We caught up with him as he healed from a broken collarbone caused by a freak mechanical injury on the up-ramp of a jump. This guy is talented, full of personality and a bloody nice person. If you’re not on the Hunter Lawrence bandwagon, jump on — he will be waving the Aussie flag on the world stage for a long time to come.
Do you owe your whole career so far to the amazing mentorship of Scott Bishop?
Hahahaha, I can’t owe my whole career to someone who still to this day gets vanilla ice cream at any given ice cream shop. No exploration, curiosity, desire to discover what lays behind the vanilla bean, but I admire the loyalty to his vanilla ice cream — fair play. Bishop, if you still go to Subway for a ham and cheese on white bread sandwich, you’re not allowed to contact me!
