When I visited West Dean Gardens last year I was struck by the beautiful trained fruit trees around the fruit garden and inside the walled garden, so I went back to ask head gardener Jim Buckland (recently retired) about the inspiration behind them and how they are formed and maintained.
The project began 25 years ago, and now there is only one grapevine left from those early plantings of fruit.
