Contemporary kitchens and bathrooms are all about good looks, serviceability and design. They’re the most expensive rooms in a home because of the plumbing and fixtures and fittings, so getting it right the first time will save you time, money and heartache.

Functionality and flow are critical in kitchen design. The kitchen is where you grab a quick cuppa on the go before a weekday commute. It’s where you whip up a culinary feast for your next family gathering, and where the kids prop open their schoolbooks and nibble on afternoon tea while they do their homework.

A kitchen needs to be functional, serviceable and practical, as well as comfortable and inviting. Of course, there are many different potential layouts — the one wall (or straight line) style, which is the mainstay of smaller apartment-style kitchens; L-shaped kitchens; galley style (a favourite of chefs because it allows freedom of movement) and U-shaped, which offers plenty of flexibility.
