AMRITA SHER-GIL

Amrita’s parents – Marie Antoinette Gottesman-Baktay, a Hungarian pianist, and Umrao Singh Sher-Gil, an Indian nobleman – met in 1910 in Lahore. They fell in love, married and, in 1913, their first child, Amrita, was born in Budapest, Hungary. The Sher-Gils lived there until Amrita was seven years and eleven months old.
