There have been viral posts of influencers crying about the “blood, sweat and tears” they pour into Instagram, direct appeals to followers for more comments and a frenzy of media.

But does it really matter that Instagram seems to be doing away with “likes”?

The social media platform has been trialling a new formula in Australia by concealing the number of likes a post has received – a move which has the potential to dramatically change the commercial and cultural landscape of the social media platform.

While users can still see the number of likes their own posts
