Sure, they had dabbled with small performance bikes prior to this; witness the T20 Super Six, a proper giant killer if ever. With almost 30bhp and minimum heft, the Super Six was a delightful skinny little bike. After that Suzuki took a couple of slightly awkward turns; the 250s got slower and a bit porky, then
