Fulfilling an election promise, the Narendra Modi government, in its first Cabinet meeting on May 31, extended the PM-Kisan scheme to all farmers. The scheme promises poor farmers an annual payout of Rs 6,000, directly transferred to their bank accounts in three instalments. The decision means the scheme will now have some 145 million beneficiaries and cost the exchequer Rs 87,000
