What we need
It seems to me that manufacturers believe that consumers think a more complicated camera implies higher quality. I am a (fortunate) Leica user and would not swap that manual experience for any amount of automation and so I do not need an extensive all-singing, all-dancing menu. However, the Leica is not pocketable when something smaller and lighter is required for travel.
The gap manufacturers have failed to see to their cost is the one being filled by mobile phones. What is needed is a small, high-quality, pocketable camera to compete. Camera manufacturers should now focus on producing a truly pocketable, 24MP camera with a reasonably sized (1-inch or APS) sensor, a fixed 35mm (equivalent) f/2
