THE GWR and LMS locked horns in a top-of-the table clash at a high-profile transport auction in Newbury on March 12, with the victor’s spoils eventually going to the latter a day after the auctioneer had laid down his gavel and the packed saleroom had emptied.
The occasion was, one of a pair built by the late Harry Powell of Crewe and regarded by many as one of the best railway models ever made.
