In the mid-2000s I was working on a series of portraits called ‘Contenders’ which had been commissioned by The Observer Sport. The series went on for several years and I probably photographed about 25 people. All the subjects had been identified as the possible ‘next big thing’ in their specialist sports and some of them went on to great success, including young footballer Fara Williams and sailor Ellen MacArthur.
