CHECK YOUR SIDE HATCHES FOR ROT

I noticed that the side hatch door on my caravan was no longer closing properly and so decided to investigate.

The hatch door is trimmed in four pieces of aluminium and butt joined at the corners. When I unscrewed these I was horrified – with little to none sealant water had been absorbed and soaked into what appears to be plywood.

I urge all readers to take preventative steps – undo your hatch covers, disassemble and if no repairs are necessary reseal using as much sealant as you can to prevent water penetrating this weak spot.
