Birds in the Coxcombs
This traditional red and green antique appliqué quilt is dated from the 1850s. Michelle purchased it from Julie Silber in America — with is quirky appliqué and whimsical border treatment it was too much for Michelle to resist. And she did not have a bird in her collection of quilts. That is her excuse and she is sticking with it!
In antique appliqué patterns, the Coxcomb was inspired by the shape of Cockscomb flowers, also known as Wool Flowers or Brain Celosia. The flower’s name is suggestive of a rooster’s comb.
