FB: What was the real goal behind the new RR?

JM: The focus of the bike was very clear from the start; it needed to weigh less and produce more power. But we weren’t talking about small gains. You can feel five kilos on the racetrack, but if you can lose ten kilos you can feel that kind of difference on the road. We had to think big, and we managed to pull it off.

FB: The 2019 RR’s look is fundamentally different to that of its predecessors. What was the thinking?

JM: We wanted to make a statement. This is the new generation. If we just stuck with the old look and style, as loved as it was, people would look at the new RR as a revised model and not as a revolutionised motorcycle.
