The pearl has been a sign of royalty and nobility for millennia, and a byword for all that is rare and admirable. Cleopatra was said to have hosted the most expensive dinner in the ancient world by dissolving a pearl in wine or vinegar, and no Elizabethan-era portrait was complete without lashings of the luminous gems adorning jewellery, clothing and headpieces.
