KITCHENS
MONOCHROME MAGNIFICENCE
“This kitchen has a feature tile splashback that is quite striking, as it goes right to the ceiling as opposed to a standard splashback height. With the ever-increasing popularity of matt finishes, the melamine cabinetry chosen for this kitchen is not only cost-effective, but provides a contemporary and sleek look. Melamine has often been referred to as the ‘cheap option’, but there have been remarkable advances with this product over the years. The white cabinetry, teamed with the black feature overhead cupboards as well as the 12mm Neolith benchtop with black shadowline, gives the kitchen an overall luxe look. The cabinetry colour choice was very important as it needed to match the Dekton Zenith (white) benchtop. This was a difficult choice as many of the white melamines looked too stark or too cream. The black edge-pull handle, which sits on top of the drawers and doors, lends a streamlined look and extra storage cupboards on the reverse side of the servery are available for use when overhang for stools is not needed.”

DARK AND DAPPER
“Black is the new black and indulgence is allowed in this unique renovation. A closed-in kitchen with separate pantry has been opened and integrated, remodelled and polished, to establish a free-flowing space of modernised decadence. A feature white island bench carved from Quantum Quartz pairs with white surrounding walls and simple grey tiles to offset an arrangement of black finishes that begin with a long Nero Assoluto Essastone benchtop around the Smeg cooktop. Matt black cabinetry by Lamicolor reaches nearly to the ceiling to provide plenty of kitchen storage. A smoked mirror splashback sends light from the Hettich LED downlights around the room, matched nicely by the Spiegel Smokey Grey laminate kickboards by Halifax Vogel. Meanwhile, feature accents in timber frame the cooktop bench and a timber dining extension onto the island bench is finished in Chalet Oak laminate by Lamicolor, giving the room a warm competing colour and grainy focal texture. A black granite sink by Franke and a matt black tap on the white island unit confirms the kitchen’s dark, brooding roots — the perfect finishing touches to a gregarious, contemporary space.”

ETERNALLY ASYMMETRICAL
“This kitchen forms part of a completely new area within the home. The existing house was raised and new living, kitchen and dining sections were built underneath. The owners wanted a space that was clean, contemporary and easy to entertain in, but also with a point of difference. As the original home was raised, posts to support the second level were required within the kitchen space. They needed to be located almost a third of the way along the back wall, so a full-height wall has been integrated to conceal them. From this predetermined layout stemmed the inspiration for the asymmetrical design. This wall has been painted to match the cabinetry, creating a seamless transition between the adjacent tall cabinetry and benchtop. The position of this kitchen and, in turn, the main focal entry point was always going to be the end of the island bench. This, combined with the asymmetry of the window location due to the fixed position of the structural supporting wall between the cooktop and ovens, created the asymmetrical nature of the design. The pantry and laundry have been concealed behind a rather prominent wall adjacent to the kitchen. To highlight this element, the stairwell timber detail was matched with the blackbutt timber-clad wall. The back of the island bench has also been finished in blackbutt timber to form a connection. This detail has been carried through to the shadowline handle profile in the pantry that sits against the Fenix Nero laminate cupboard fronts. The inspiration behind the stone waterfall
