Ultra-Trail Drakensberg

KWAZULU-NATAL 28 - 29 April 2017

VINCENT VIET climbs up the lush Gxalingenwa Valley in the Southern Drakensberg, with 60km of the 100km Ultra-Trail Drakensberg ahead of him.

“I could see groups of reedbuck in the morning, Verreaux's eagles, and baboons my size perched on the cliffs,” reminisced the Parisian on his return to Cape Town.

“I went up to 3,000m on Sani Pass (the highest pass in southern Africa). I have discovered an exceptional place.”

Vincent won the 100km outright in 12h37min, not even spotted again by his closest competitors Pedro Calderon (Spain, 14h31min) and Lauri Tuomaala (Finland, 14h33min).

This was not Vincent’s first race in SA: he placed second at the Addo Elephant 44km (see p82). He’s been in Cape Town studying English with his partner Charlotte Konc since January, while freelancing as a running coach and journalist.
