Build your ultra engine

Pimp my ride… we have all seen these vehicles with go-fast modifications like spoilers, low profile tyres, and lowered suspension. They are set up to go fast and to handle well, but the question is what lies underneath the bonnet?

It may be that the looks are matched with a turbocharged engine, making it the complete package, or the looks may hide a normally aspirated 1400cc petrol engine that is dropped at the traffic light and wheezes asthmatically up climbs.

Elite runners will have the complete package, and using the above analogy, will have a good engine to power a good chassis. This sounds pretty obvious for short, fast trail races, but what if I told you that by adding speed work to your arsenal for ultra-trail running, it would turbocharge your running, transforming you into a more competitive runner?
