It turns out tyre warmers are best fitted before a race. Thankfully, it was my teammate Gary Johnson who’d drawn the short straw to start our three hour endurance on cold rubber. Gaz and I were about as organised as a Filofax in a tumble-dryer, but while we lacked in readiness, raw pace meant we were running right at the pointy end from the very off, being out in the lead by some 40-plus seconds by the time my TT-winning hombre made a surprise appearance down pitlane just 20 minutes in.
