The Real STEVE HISLOP


Steve ‘Hizzy’ Hislop was an 11-times Isle of ManTT winner, he was British 250cc champion and double British Superbike champion, but there was a lot more to him than his racing achievements.

The Scotsman lost his father and brother within the space of three years but it didn’t stop him racing and achieving impressive results.The meticulous master was more than just a racer; he was a complex character, a loving family man, and a daunting rival on track.

Three people who knew him best were bitter rival Niall Mackenzie, Rob McElnea, who was his team manager for many seasons and the team boss who took him to his final British Superbike title and Paul Bird, who resurrected the latter stages of his career.

Hislop: The enigma

There are not enough adjectives to describe the enigma that was Steve Hislop.The diminutive Scot with the bravest of hearts and a temper to match, his slender frame and resolute persona belied a kind, gentle and emotionally contorted – maybe even lonely – man whose true friends he could recall on the fingers of one hand.

He was a subliminally gifted and masterful genius who could be annoyingly cantankerous and consummately belligerent when he so chose, but the legacy of the man that was Hislop is without question.The mystery is
