You change up when the tacho needle reaches six and keep the throttle wide open. In that situation, Laverda’s 981cc triple poses a compelling question. Do you marvel more at its dohc engine, or thrill in the confidence coursing through its chassis? Cyril Ayton, Motorcycle Sport’s editor, observed this phenomenon in 1984 and noted how the triple was more suited to the seasoned cyclist. Those weaned on Asian fours, he mused, might miss the point of the missing cylinder. Those lucky enough to experience the machine on the open road found it impossible to miss that magical mix of quick spooling thrust and Italian legs. A true icon of its era.

Ayton’s description was accurate: the Laverda triple is motorcycling’s Alpha Male and it attracts a similar type of rider.
