Building a better box Preparing for Reassembly

Review your notes and have another good look at the gearbox internals after cleaning. Consult the parts list and diagrams. Order the replacement parts including EP-90, SAE-50 or other specified grade of oil as needed.

I have seen Loctite recommended, wisely so, for some of the fasteners and components but with no guidance on the type and grade of Loctite to use. There are many, many of these for different materials and purposes. Have a wander around the Loctite web site and you will see what I mean. Anyway, I generally use medium strength Loctite 242, especially for parts to be removed for maintenance such as the drain and level plugs. I also have low strength 222 for weaker materials and 290 medium to high strength ‘wicking’ type for post-assembly use. In all cases, make sure the threads are clean before application.

While the parts are on their way, clean the covers (polishing optional) and gearbox casing, taking care to remove all traces of old gasket and sealant. Clean up the threads in the inner cover,
