50 YEARS AGO...MARCH 1968
■ British Railways placed a £2.5 million order with Swan Hunter & Tyne Shipbuilders for a multi-purpose ferry to enter service in summer 1969. Named after a 5th Century King of Britons, the ferry would carry railway freight wagons, sleeping cars, motor cars and lorries between Dover and Dunkirk during the winter but be switched in summer to run between Dover
