■ TRIAL BORINGS IN MANCHESTER: In connection with the Manchester rapid transit study, trial borings started on June 17 to test the strength and depth of sandstone under the city centre.
A total of 20 trial borings were made on sites between Oxford Road and Victoria stations. Alderman Harry Sharp, chairman of Manchester Corporation Transport Department, cut the first sod.
