Asparagus used to be the preserve of high-class restaurants, but is now much more widely available and has become a popular pick-your-own crop. The result is that more people than ever are enjoying the distinctive delights of spring fresh asparagus spears. Yet it can still be expensive to buy and by supplying the plants with just a few simple needs you’ll soon be growing your own.
The biggest outlay is for the crowns (young plants) and it is worth buying the best. It is also possible to grow your own plants from seed, but this is a longer-term prospect (three years before harvesting), you’ll have a very small choice of varieties and you may have to weed out the female plants which otherwise
