When automobiles were first invented, they were exclusively for the rich and well-heeled, but as time passed, the popularity and desire for them grew by leaps and bounds and they became available to people from all income levels. There were more than 100 different automobile manufacturers in America in those early years and the vast majority were hand-built in small batches. It was General Motors’ President, Alfred P Sloan, Jr, who perhaps said it best regarding the pioneering early years in the automobile industry: “Selling the cars was easy; the big problem was producing them.”
