I trained as a mechanical engineer and worked at JCB in the UK midlands, before leaving for Africa at the beginning of 1978. My first service vehicle was a 2.6 Series III Pick Up with JCB.

My next vehicles were 109 Station Wagons with the Malawi Government, plus two Mk I Range Rovers. I used the latter extensively to do inspection work in the central and northern regions.

While in Malawi, I bought a Series III 109 Station Wagon as a shell, and rebuilt it. My father came to visit before I’d finished it, but in order not to miss the touring of Malawi, we finished it ‘en route’. The most memorable drive took us to Milange, where we turned left at the border with Mozambique and then left again to climb the saddle at the northern end of Mount Mulanje, up and over Fort Lister
