Finding peace in rainbow country

The horizon is seared with a terracotta sunset as we fly into Karratha, portal to the Pilbara. Here, at the far north-western edge of Western Australia, the Indian Ocean laps sparkling at the coastline. Trailing inland into the Great Sandy Desert, the Pilbara region spans a breathtaking 507,896 square kilometres, encompassing three national parks, deep gorges, green rivers, mesmerising mountain ranges and vast desert plains.

Sheer remoteness alone (Karratha lies 1538km from Perth) makes visiting the region unforgettable while staggering history adds to the spell. As you peer down from the plane at the tiny oasis of town lights surrounded by leagues of dark, undulating land, there’s the sense of arriving at the end of the known world and the beginning of a heart-stopping adventure.

Women’s circles

Beneath a full moon’s silvery blanket, Karratha’s township of around 20,000 people lies quiet. After picking up our rental RAV4, it’s a short drive to yoga and meditation room The Space for the start of our outback wellness adventure.
