Batting the inside story
A quilt, by definition, has three layers: quilt top, batting and backing. Batting is the layer in the middle of the ‘quilt sandwich’. In earlier centuries coverlets and heavily embellished quilts, such as crazy quilts, did not have batting. Purely utilitarian patchwork quilts featured old blankets and sheeting for the middle layer.
These days, specially produced battings are available in a variety of materials — both man-made and natural, and combinations of both — as well as with a variety of features. These affect the definition of the quilting, warmth, comfort and resilience. Different types of batting can make a quilt appear flat or full, stiff or drapable.
