VOYAGE TO MANDALAY

The shallow Ayeyarwady River is the same hue as my morning coffee. In its latte-coloured water delicate fishing canoes bob like half-peanut shells, children bathe and women in sarong-like longyi slap washing on rocks along the sandy shore.

Myanmar is the land of a million pagodas… and a thousand potholes. So the Ayeyarwady has long been known as the ‘road’ to Mandalay, the most practical way to traverse the country.
