Cecil Arthur Butler was born in England in 1902 and turned up in Lithgow with his family eight years later. He was small and he was dyslexic and to protect himself from bullies he taught himself to box. Victimised by teachers at the Cooerwull Academy, Bowenfels, he was yanked out of school and home taught by his mother before getting a gig at Australian Aircraft & Engineering Co. Ltd at Mascot. He immediately fell in love (that didn't take long did it?) with flying and after getting his pilot’s license, went barnstorming around the country. Flying was his life.

He dropped the ‘Cecil’ and became known as Arthur Butler and in 1929 visited Tooraweenah, near Gilgandra, where he met and instantly fell in love with local girl Doris Garling. Butler later wrote: “…
