In the past two decades, the term ‘luxury real estate’ has been, like almost any phrase with the prefix ‘luxury’, (ab)used beyond the limits of credibility. Just like ‘luxury menswear’ is used to describe not only the timeless classics of style genius Ralph Lauren but also the unspeakably vulgar, skull-encrusted nylon aberrations of Philipp Plein, ‘luxury property’ is often used indiscriminately to describe any mid-western set, as well as a storied Renaissance castle that has been in the same family for several centuries.
