You might not have heard of a boat called Pardo. I only heard about it half an hour before stepping aboard the Pardo 43 at the Cannes boat show last September. But, had I been a sailing man, I would surely have known all about Cantiere del Pardo at Forli on Italy’s Adriatic coast, which recently celebrated its 40th anniversary and has built something like 4,000 sailing yachts in that time, under the Grand Soleil brand.

As Fabio Planamente, the shipyard’s general manager, observed, if you can build a high-tech, high-performance sailboat, the technical challenges presented by a 45-foot motoryacht are pretty straightforward.
