POETS & WRITERS MAGAZINE ANNOUNCES state, national, and international prizes in poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and translation. We list only prizes of $1,000 or more, prizes of less than $1,000 that charge no entry fee, and prestigious nonmonetary awards. Applications and submissions for the following prizes are due shortly. Before submitting a manuscript, first contact the sponsoring organization for complete guidelines. When requesting information by mail, enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE). African Poetry Book Fund

SILLERMAN FIRST BOOK PRIZE

A prize of $1,000 and publication by University of Nebraska Press is given annually for a debut poetry collection by a poet who was born in Africa, is an African national or resident, or whose parents are African. The prize is cosponsored by Prairie Schooner. The African Poetry Book Fund editorial board will judge. Using the online submission system, submit a manuscript of at least 50 pages by December 1. American Library Association

W. Y. BOYD LITERARY AWARD

A prize of $5,000 is given annually for a novel published in the previous year that is set in a period when the United States was at war. Publishers or authors may submit seven copies of a book published in 2017 by December 1. There is no entry fee. Visit the website for the required entry form and complete guidelines.

Asheville Poetry Review

WILLIAM MATTHEWS POETRY PRIZE

A prize of $1,000 and publication in Asheville Poetry Review is given annually for a poem. The winner is also invited to read at Malaprop’s Bookstore in Asheville, North Carolina. Ashland Creek Press

SISKIYOU PRIZE FOR NEW ENVIRONMENTAL LITERATURE

A prize of $1,000 is given annually for a book of fiction or creative nonfiction that focuses on the environment, animal protection, ecology, or wildlife. The winner also receives a four-week residency at PLAYA, a writers and artists retreat located on the edge of the Great Basin near Summer Lake, Oregon. Unpublished manuscripts and books published in the past five years are eligible. Jonathan Balcombe will judge. Using the online submission system, submit a manuscript of 40,000 to 90,000 words or a book published in 2012 or later with a $18 entry fee by December 31. Australian Book Review

PETER PORTER POETRY PRIZE

A prize of $5,000 Australian (approximately $3,970) is given annually for a poem. A second-place prize of $2,000 Australian (approximately $1,590) will also be given. The winners will be published in Australian Book Review. John Hawke, Bill Manhire, and Jen Webb will judge. Bayou Magazine

POETRY AND FICTION PRIZES

Two prizes of $1,000 each will be given annually for a poem and a short story. The winners will also receive a subscription to Bayou Magazine and their work will be considered for publication. Kay Murphy will judge the Kay Murphy Poetry Prize; Matt Bell will judge the James Knudsen Prize for Fiction.
