    The opening shots of the Boxer Rebellion caused alarm within the Western diplomatic legations and among the Chinese Christian population in the north of China. Calls for their protection brought the multi-national forces of the Eight-Nation Alliance to raise the siege in Beijing and defeat the militant Boxers and elements of the Qing army.
