ONE of the big secrets shared by professional designers and cinematographers is a thorough understanding of colour theory. This embraces both science and cultural traditions in the way that colours – and combinations of colours – are perceived.
Most of us accept that cool colours like blues and cyans have a calming effect, while warm colours like reds and oranges push out from a scene and stimulate the senses. But when it comes to combining colours, there are specific choices we can make to lift a picture.
This is best represented by the ‘colour wheel’ – a simple diagram that reveals at a glance which colours complement each other. By choosing complementary colours in your shots, you maximise the colour contrast in a scene, and immediately make your photos more powerful and compelling.
