[PROJECT 1] Combine natural elements

Take a different approach to landscape photography

Inspired by the likes of Richard Long and Robert Smithson, David Shannon-Lier’s landscape images combine sculptural elements in the land with long exposures to capture the movement of the earth. This image, taken from his series Of Heaven And Earth, was shot in Bisti Badlands, a wilderness area just south of Farmington, New Mexico.

Surprisingly, David tackles this clever set-up singlehanded. “I spend the first part of the morning finding a compelling composition.” David then uses the sun’s position to help him place the elements in the scene. “Once everything is ready, I carefully and precisely set up my 8x10 camera. I sleep on a cot or in a tent so I can wake early enough to close the shutter. The exposures are usually about eight hours long.”
