W hat’s your earliest memory of photography?
When I was seven years old, I was in Portugal on a family holiday. We went out to dinner with another family, whose father had a Polaroid camera. I remember him taking a picture then resting it against one of the wine bottles. I was mesmerised by watching the image appear out of nothing. That was my initial trigger. I thought it was really magical.
Did you study photography at university?
Initially I did a Sociology degree at Edinburgh, but I was also getting into photography at that time. My dissertation was on image creation in public service advertising, and I enjoyed taking pictures.
After university I thought, “I love photography, so I’ll try to put a portfolio together and go to college,” which is what I did. I applied to Edinburgh Napier University and started a photography course.
Was it a good course?
Despite it being a good course, it wasn’t right for me, so I transferred to the Art College in Edinburgh, then changed my mind and moved down to London and worked as an assistant. Afterwards, I took up a place at
