Making a beeline

Q I’ve spent hours trying to shoot a bee in flight, but nothing was sharp. Can you help? Bryan Oldchurch

A Well, you are not exactly picking yourself an easy subject, Bryan – a small, flying insect that is difficult to predict and focus on! I’ve played around with flying bees as a subject a few times, and I have had some success, both with a medium-length telephoto and a macro lens.

On a warm day, before it gets too hot and the bees go into hyper-drive, get comfortable close to a bee-attracting flower. Have your camera set to continuous focus and select a small group of autofocus points. If you are brave, you could even try just one point. You’ll need a high shutter speed too, so even if it’s sunny, use a higher ISO such as 400 or 800, which will enable
