It's the wedding of the century. So of course the entire League of Superheroes just has to attend, which means they have to leave the city and the world in the care of the rather unprepared hands of the Junior League, at least for a little while. Green Ghost thought everything was going to be easy and he was going to receive all kinds of praise from Captain Victorious. Then things went terribly, terribly awry when there was a containment leak in Science Lab 1 and something got loose. Now an insidious blob is absorbing League headquarters and there's a good chance they're all going to die. After retiring as the supervillain Darkstar, Vereint has built a happy life together with Warrick and their adopted daughter, Melissa Kim. Though it's hard to stay on the sideline while his husband is putting his life in danger as the superhero Blue Ice, Vereint is determined to provide a stable environment for Melissa, even if that means pretending to be normal. When Melissa manifests her first metability it comes as a welcome surprise, as with training from Warrick she is able to become Blue Ice's sidekick, Blue Devil. It gives Vereint a sense of relief to know that two people he loves are able to watch each other's backs when he can't be there. For a time, life is good. They are an ex-supervillain and a current superhero raising a child to be one of the next generation of heroes. Every day is an adventure, though a much quieter and gentler one than Vereint ever expected to enjoy. His happiness seems to have become endless. Until tragedy strikes. And Vereint gives in to the darkness within him, revels in the terrible acts he commits with no care about coming out the other side. For when you strip away the normal man, there's only a Darkstar left behind, eclipsing the light of all other metahumans. A remote and pitiless monster that wears Vereint's face but has none of his humanity.

Reminiscent of the comic books of old, the world of "Heroes & Villains" is actually a pretty grim one. With one okay from the CMPF (Central Metahuman Policing Force) a metahuman found breaking the law can lose all of their basic human rights. If they're lucky, they're executed. If they're not lucky... well, no metahuman wants to end up in Butcher Bay. The good guys in "Heroes & Villains" aren't so good, and the bad guys aren't so bad. And Vereint is just a guy that wants to get ahead in the world.

Susie Smith has no idea where she came from or who she used to be. Even her name is one she was given at the hospital where she woke up after a serious brain injury. The only thing she knows about herself is that she was caught in a super battle and was just one of the collateral victims of Malice’s attack on the Megalopolous parade. One among hundreds of wounded people, no one stepped forward to claim her and she was eventually shuffled off into foster care. Then, while hanging out with her friends, the mall is attacked and Susie comes face-to-face with the Teen Demis. And they seem to know her... Now she must remember who she used to be and find the person that betrayed her and left her for dead.
