Violet Harper is just about to turn seventeen when her world is torn apart. Fleeing from her home and from the creatures who took everything from her, she ends up in New York. Chosen by Fate to save her world from being overrun by demons, Violet Harper doesn't just have the Hellmaster's minions to contend with. She now also has to avoid a demonic creature that has been sent through the portal to spy on her. Unexpectedly running into the boyfriend that she'd left behind in Denver, she must decide whether to renew her relationship with him. If she does, she will have to juggle seeing him with training and searching for the hidden entrances to hell. Keeping him a secret from the rest of the team will be far from easy. If Nathan finds out, she isn't sure what the consequences would be. Her friends aren't the only angels who are trapped in the city. Violet meets two more celestial beings and it is hard to tell whether they are her allies or her enemies. Even with her personal life in disarray, she can't lose focus on her task. She must enter the eighth realm of hell, confront one of the Demon Princes and find the next piece of the mysterious object of power.

Violet already has the weight of the world on her shoulders, but a new enemy rises to test her. This time, it isn't a demon or one of the creatures from hell who will get in her way. Instead, it is a challenger for Zach's affections. Thanks to her rival, she will encounter someone who she hoped she'd never see again. Violet always knew that her mission to save the world from a horde of demons wouldn't be easy. But she didn't anticipate just how many obstacles would be thrown in her way. Her task doesn't get any easier when she is forced to wonder whether some of her allies are really on her side. Her secret relationship with Zach is facing its own challenges. To add to her burden, she has to fight her growing feelings for her guardian angel, Nathan. As if things weren't already bad enough, the Hellmaster's pet raven is seeking vengeance for the loss of its eye. Hell bent on punishing her, its revenge triggers an event that will change everything for Violet. Violet has to face many trials during her mission to stop the apocalypse from wiping out mankind, but her personal life is almost as complicated. The rivalry between her and Candice Weller is increasing in intensity. She won't be able to resist taking revenge on the girl who is trying to steal Zach away from her. Detective Reynolds seems to be the only cop in Manhattan who doesn't have a vendetta against Violet. She has told him that a war is raging between angels and demons, but he won't believe her until he sees the irrefutable proof for himself. The angels who started out as Violet's allies are planning something and whatever it is isn't going to be pleasant. Hagith and Orifiel are determined to bend her to their will and they don't care about the cost that comes with their interference. The end result will strain Nathan's trust in her and she might not be able to regain it again.

Slowly dying from the Wraith Warrior's toxin, Violet must resort to drastic measures to stay alive so she can continue her missions to hell. She will need to go against all of her instincts and trust someone who hates her in order for her health to be partially restored. Detective Reynolds requests the assistance of Violet and her angelic friends. He was put in her path for a reason, but she doesn't know what it is yet. She suspects that he will somehow aid her in her war against demonkind, so she will do whatever she can to keep him on her side. Using a newly discovered skill, she finally manages to complete one of the tasks that she had been planning on for quite some time. She also discovers who has been whittling down the demons in the city. Their plan is dangerous to her and her friends and she isn't sure if she will be able to put a stop to it.

Growing tired of being chased by Vepar and her death squad, Violet and her friends embark on a plan to turn things around. The Demon Lord doesn't know it, but the hunter might soon become the hunted. Bob hasn't given up on punishing Violet for her past humiliation of him. If he gets his hands on her, he'll make her regret the day they first met when she'd chopped his fingers off. Staying out of his clutches is on the top of her list of things to avoid, yet it won't be easy. Violet's next trip to hell will be fraught with danger. Not just for her, but for her best friend as well. Sam is perilously close to becoming human again, which means he is fragile and easily broken. She must hunt down the Demon Prince, find the object that he has in his possession and keep Sam safe from harm.

Without her soul to balance her opposing natures, Violet's transformation into a demon is nearing completion. The evil that resides inside her is becoming harder to contain. If she doesn't find her essence soon, the balance could be permanently tipped towards the darkness. Sophia foresaw that someone close to Violet would betray her. Already edging towards the dark side, when she learns the details of the treachery, she is sent teetering to the brink of no return.  Fleeing from her betrayer, Violet seeks refuge only to be caught by her enemies. With only two Demon Princes left to defeat, she is nearing the end of the mission that Fate burdened her with. She will need to call on the help of an unusual ally to be able to survive the trials ahead.

Violet is now nearing the end of her harrowing journey, but she still has a lot to accomplish. She is in danger of turning to the dark side and needs to take drastic action to purge herself of the toxin. She will have to trust in Fate that her plan won't go horribly wrong. Leo is still being held captive by the angels. Violet needs to rescue him and to retrieve Nathan's grace as well. It will take skills that she doesn't yet possess to pull this off. Once more, she will need to suffer before she can gain the abilities that she will need. When it comes to her friends, she is willing to do whatever she has to in order to keep them safe. Violet still has one final fragment of the object of power to retrieve, which means she will need to return to hell again. The Demon Princes warned her that disaster would fall once she killed them all. She will finally learn what they meant, but by then it will be too late. It will take power that is currently out of her reach to stop the apocalypse from wiping out humanity.
