There is an ancient folktale still told in China called Gift of the Unicorn.
The Chinese people once believed in the Ki-lin, a magical creature that looked like a pale, miniature horse with a single pearly horn in the center of its forehead. The Ki-lin appeared before China’s most important people as a blessing from the gods and could be seen only by those with great virtue and wisdom.
In the sixth century b.c., however, Ki-lin was just a haunting memory. For hundreds of years, China’s various states had been at war with one another. Chinese leaders did not help their suffering people, and no one saw the wondrous unicorn.
During this difficult time, a sweet, honorable woman lived by the base of a sacred mountain. She was wise and devout but very sad as she had no son.
The Chinese people believe that to be without a son is cause for the deepest grief. Only the oldest son can worship at each family’s home altar, praying to the family’s ancestors. Only the son’s prayer, they
