The Moon's Curse - Jason Moore

    Prologue: The Shifting Veil

Evan’s jaw tightened. And if it’s not?

Stefan stood, his movements deliberate as he reached for the long blade resting by the hearth. Then we keep moving until we find something that is.

The cold air pressed down on Evan and Stefan as they descended into the cavern. The stone walls were slick with moisture, glinting faintly in the light of Evan’s talisman. The passage twisted and turned, narrowing at points until they were forced to move single file. Stefan’s steps were steady, his blade held at his side, while Evan followed closely, his dagger drawn and his breaths shallow.

The weight of the veil’s corruption grew heavier with each step. The faint hum of energy that had been present at the entrance was now a low, pulsating thrum that seemed to resonate in Evan’s chest. It felt like the walls themselves were alive, breathing in sync with the unnatural rhythm of the corrupted altar ahead.

Do you feel that? Evan asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Stefan nodded without turning. The veil’s thin here. The closer we get to the altar, the stronger it’ll feel. Stay sharp.

Lira’s gaze met his, her determination mirrored in his eyes. Then let’s end this.

Evan looked up at the swirling void above, determination hardening his gaze. Then we keep going, he said. Until it’s done.

Lira’s chant continued, her voice steady despite the growing tension. The runes around her flared brighter, their light forming a protective barrier that held the Nythrall at bay—though it wouldn’t hold for long.

Evan! Stefan shouted, his blade slashing through another scout. We can’t hold them off forever!

Evan gritted his teeth, his dagger slicing through another attacker as he glanced back at Lira. Just a little longer! he called out.

Lira’s voice rose, the runes responding with a burst of light that sent a shockwave through the clearing. The Nythrall faltered, their forms flickering as the energy disrupted their connection to the veil. But the respite was brief; the creatures regrouped, their movements growing more frenzied as they pressed the attack.

As the battle raged on, the ground beneath the Nexus began to tremble. The runes flared one final time before stabilizing, their light steady and unyielding. Lira’s chant reached a crescendo, her voice filled with raw power as she completed the ritual.

The Nexus responded, its jagged surface glowing with a brilliant white light that pierced through the darkness. The tendrils of energy spiraling from its base began to retract, pulling the fragmented threads of the veil back into alignment.

It’s working! Lira shouted, her voice filled with both relief and urgency. But I can’t hold it alone!

Evan moved toward her, the talisman glowing faintly as he placed it at the center of the circle. The artifact flared to life, its light merging with the runes as the energy surged. The Nythrall let out a collective screech, their forms disintegrating into smoke as the connection between them and the veil was severed.

Stefan joined them, his blade still drawn as he stood guard. Is it done? he asked, his voice tense.

Evan placed a hand on her shoulder, his voice steady. We’re not leaving until it’s fixed.

The ground trembled violently as the Nexus pulsed, its light growing brighter with each wave of energy. Lira’s voice faltered, her strength waning as the ritual took its toll. Evan knelt beside her, his
