Prologue
On a different planet, in a different galaxy, within a completely different dimension, the grand graduation hall stood as a testament to the architectural marvels of Ralonis. High, vaulted ceilings stretched overhead, adorned with intricate frescoes that seemed to shift and shimmer under the ambient light. The walls, constructed from a translucent crystalline material, allowed the outside light to flood in, casting prismatic hues across the room.
Rows of seats formed concentric circles around a central dais, each chair crafted from a sleek metal alloy and cushioned with plush, iridescent fabric. The floor beneath was a mosaic of polished stones, depicting scenes from Ralonian history and culture, each tile meticulously placed to create a tapestry of vibrant colors and intricate patterns.
Banners hung from the ceiling, swaying gently with the air currents. Each banner represented one of the many guilds and academies across Ralonis, their sigils emblazoned in bold colors. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement and anticipation as thousands of bright golden orbs swirled like fireflies on a warm summer night. Each orb a young Ralonian eager for their graduation from the academy anxiously awaiting what the future had to offer.
Massive chandeliers dangled from above, their crystal pendants catching the light and scattering it in a dazzling display, bathing the hall in an inviting ambiance.
On the dais, a podium stood ready for speakers. Behind it, an enormous tapestry depicted a starry night sky, with constellations forming images of legendary figures and mythical creatures. This tapestry was enchanted; stars twinkled, and figures moved subtly, adding an almost magical feel to the proceedings.
The air was filled with the scent of exotic flowers arranged in elaborate bouquets at strategic points throughout the hall. Their sweet fragrance mingled with the faint aroma of polished wood and fresh linens. The sound of soft instrumental music floated through the space, providing a gentle backdrop to the murmurs of conversation among the attendees.
A group of eight orbs entered the hall and arranged themselves in a single row in front of the tapestry on the dais. The orbs gradually shifted and morphed, changing their shape revealing their physical form. These were the faculty members, dressed in their own distinguished robes adorned with various insignias of achievement. They exchanged knowing glances and whispered words of encouragement.
A sense of unity and accomplishment pervaded the grand graduation hall as it prepared to host yet another momentous ceremony for Ralonis’s newest graduates.
A singular orb floated to the center of the decorated stage, pulsating with authority.
Congratulations graduates,
the central orb boomed, morphing into the form of the Dean of Studies, an authoritative figure cloaked in shimmering robes that caught the light. The Dean’s eyes sparkled with pride as he surveyed the sea of guardians.
You can now don your physical likeness.
Cheers erupted like a summer storm, and one by one, the orbs began to shift. Radiant flashes filled the hall as each guardian morphed into their unique physical forms. Gabe felt warmth flood his essence, and in an instant, he stood proudly between his good friends and fellow graduates Jacob and Ruth. They enveloped him in tight embraces.
Look at us!
Ruth exclaimed; her voice bright as her newly formed physical image came into view. She had transformed into a petite figure standing at 5’6" tall with curly red hair bouncing joyfully around her shoulders. Her piercing green eyes taking in all the forms around her.
Can you believe it?
Gabe grinned. Gabe’s physical form had revealed him to be 5’9" tall with short straight black hair, dark brown eyes. He appeared to be roughly 20 years old in human form. His slim frame was dressed neatly in a black suit and tie with a white collared shirt.
Best day ever,
Jacob added, his brown eyes gleaming beneath a mess of black curls. Finally, out in the field.
Jacob’s form revealed him to be 6’ tall. With black curly shoulder length hair, brown eyes and an impressively strong build. He was also dressed neatly in a black suit and tie with a white collared shirt and had the physical appearance to be slightly older than Gabe.
The Dean of Studies raised a hand to quiet the crowd. Many of you have already received your guardian assignments.
His voice rang clear above the clamor. The rest of you will receive your assignments over the next few weeks. Now go out and protect your charges!
Gabe’s heart raced at those words. He exchanged eager glances with Jacob, anticipation bubbling within him.
Slightly concerned, Ruth lowered her head and softly confessed. I haven’t gotten an assignment yet.
Don’t worry,
Jacob said trying to reassure his friend. You’ll get something awesome, I’m sure. You’re too good at everything not to.
Professor Seism said that my test scores were all very high,
Ruth added with slightly more confidence. And that the council was having difficulty deciding where to assign me because they could literally put me anywhere. Just between us, I’m hoping for somewhere out in the field. Anything except the messenger corps! I don’t like the idea of just delivering messages to guardians in the field all the time.
Well, you do fly faster than both Jacob and I put together,
Gabe said cheerfully.
Guess what Gabe and I both got.
Jacob blurted with excitement.
Gabe’s eyes widened as he added, We’re human guardians.
No way!
Ruth gasped.
Jacob pumped his fist in excitement. Yes!
Gabe’s expression turned serious but excited as he leaned closer to them. We get to look after two humans born just one day apart from each other— their parents are next door neighbors even!
Ruth’s jaw dropped in disbelief while Jacob smirked, crossing his arms confidently.
This is going to be wild,
Ruth said slowly, her mind racing with possibilities.
Once again, from the dais, the
