Options Trading for Beginners - Greg Middleton
Introduction: Welcome to the World of Options Trading
It was clear to me that other people could trade for a living, and if it was possible for other people to do it, then I could persevere long enough to figure it out. –Rob Booker
For the longest time, investing and trading options were something only done by Wall Street men in suits. The rest of us were content to make our money through our jobs and call it a day, but that isn’t true anymore. The rise of cryptocurrencies has shown that you don’t have to be a financial wizard to begin investing. Options Trading for Beginners is here to give you everything you need to start trading just as well as any Wall Street tycoon.
The thought of trading options can be a scary one, especially if you’re new to the investment world. For as long as I can remember, trading options were made to seem like a complicated, high-risk way to make money. While trading options can be risky, there is nothing to be afraid of. By learning the best strategies for trading options, you can limit your risks and increase your earnings.
Unlike trading crypto, options have been around for over 40 years. While many investors shy away from options because of the risks, there is a reason they have been around for this long.
Benefits of Trading Options
The list of benefits to trading options is endless. If you’re still not sure if trading options is the best form of investing for you, here are just a few reasons to give options a shot.
Lower Up-Front Costs
If you don’t have the capital to invest thousands of dollars up front, options are the way to go for you. As an investor, you will be able to purchase the same number of stocks for a fraction of the price when trading options. For example, if company X is selling their stocks at $50 and you want to buy 100 shares, it will cost you $5000. Instead of buying the stocks directly, you can look for an option similar to the shares you wanted to buy. You can then purchase a call option with a strike price of $100 for $34, significantly lowering your up-front costs.
While you will be paying less for your option, you will make just as much money as the person who simply bought shares. Meaning you will make a greater profit.
This is a strategy called stock replacement, and provided you choose the correct options to purchase; you can save a lot of money. The money you saved can either be a safety net in case of a loss or can be invested in a different option, increasing your chances of profits.
Reduced Risk
The general consensus is that options are riskier than most other investments, but that isn’t always true. Unlike buying regular stocks, you’re not obligated to keep your option if you feel that it won’t benefit you once the contract ends. Having the option to back out of a deal when things aren’t going as planned is a great way to reduce the amount of money you lose. Since options usually cost less than ordinary equities, you have already lowered your potential losses.
Options are often used as a hedge. Hedges are investments made solely for the purpose of reducing the risk of another investment. Later in this book, we will go into more detail about hedges. For now, all you need to know is that using options as a hedge makes it safer than trading stocks.
Higher Returns
It’s simple math; the less you pay up front, the higher your profits. We’ve established that it’s cheaper to buy options than buy stocks. For example, you and a friend buy the same number of shares, except they buy their shares directly as stocks, and you buy options. You will both make the same amount of money. The only difference is that you would have paid less for the option meaning you would have made a higher return than your friend.
More Strategies
Trading options provide you with a new world of investment strategies. There are plenty of alternative strategies you can use to mimic certain positions. When this is done, it’s called synthetics. Synthetics provide investors with new ways to reach the same goals. This gives investors a kind of flexibility that can only be found when trading options.
When it comes to options, you have the chance to make money whether stocks move or not. A benefit you won’t get when trading stocks. Stocks rarely rise at rapid paces, leaving your money at a standstill for long periods. Using the correct options strategies can lead you to make money even
