CHAPTER NINETY-ONE
Lusia
Three days later.
The darkness was uncomfortable and I was struggling to wake up. I was numb to my surroundings and couldn't move a muscle. It felt like I was frozen in a particular spot plagued with a darkness I couldn't overcome. Then slowly, I felt warmth around me, and above me, a light shone on me.
I could feel my body moving. My once-frozen muscles felt alive as I moved them. It looked like the light made everything feel better. And then, the light became brighter and it blinded me.
I blinked awake, my body heavy, as if it had been hollowed out and filled with lead. My muscles felt stiff like I had been in a particular position for hours. Maybe days. I tried to move but my muscles cried out in pain, pinning me down to the bed where I found myself in.
The room around me was a blank slate, stark and unfamiliar, with bare stone walls and a single window that let in a sliver of pale light.
My head felt foggy like I'd been wading through mud, and a dull ache throbbed somewhere deep in my bones. I didn't know where I was, and that made me feel terrified, a quiet panic ignited in my chest.
I tried to piece together what had happened, how I'd ended up here, but my head pounded each time I tried to think about it.
At first, there was nothing, just a void where memories should've been. Then, slowly, jagged fragments slipped into place, sharp-edged and unwelcome.
Finn. He was the first.
My brother's face flashed in my mind, his jaw tight with that stubborn determination he always wore. He had snuck into the castle, risking everything to drag me back to the pack. I could still hear his voice, low and urgent, pleading with me to come with him. But I refused. I had stood my ground, even as his eyes darkened with something uglier- betrayal, maybe, or desperation.
Then it got worse. The memories sharpened, cutting deeper. Finn hadn't just begged, he had schemed. He had been plotting against Dane, the Lycan king, whispering about overthrowing him like it was some noble cause. I had wanted no part of it. That's when his patience snapped.
I saw Keon then, his beta, stepping out of the shadows with that leather whip coiled in his hands. My stomach twisted as I remembered the first crack against my skin, the searing pain that stole my breath. Finn didn't even care, he didn't watch either. He had left me in the room alone with Keon. I screamed, and begged, but it didn't stop until Dane burst in. I could still feel the relief, the way my heart leaped when he tore Keon off me, his growl echoing through the room.
I sat up too fast, the memory jolting me upright. Pain flared across my back, hot and angry, but I gritted my teeth and ignored it. I needed to move, to understand where I was.
The room spun a little as I took it in again. It was empty, sterile, nothing to hold onto. I swung my legs over the edge of the bed, my bare feet brushing the cold floor, when a voice cut through the silence.
Step down if you dared,
it said, dripping with sarcasm.
My head snapped toward the sound. At the corner of the room, I found a woman, leaning against the doorway, her arms crossed and her smirk sharp enough to slice through my fragile courage.
I froze, my pulse racing. I didn't know her, but something in her tone told me she wasn't there to help. Fear coiled tighter in my gut, but beneath it, there was a spark of defiance.
Hello,
I greeted.
She sneered at me ignoring my greeting as she walked into the room. My heart was thumping hard against my chest. I didn't know what to do. How did I get here? Was it Dane? I wasn't sure. The look in the woman's eyes wasn't friendly at all. All I saw was hatred and jealousy burning in them. There was no doubt that she didn't want me here. I didn't want to be here either, but I was in too much pain to leave. I was helpless as usual.
Lie down,
she commanded as she headed toward the wooden table that was at the other end of the room.
I was still lost. I needed to know what the hell was going on.
What happened? Who brought me here? Was it King Dane?
She turned to me swiftly, glaring at me. Her eyes were burning with rage. That frightened me. I shrank on the bed, keeping quiet and watching her tentatively.
The woman moved to the table and picked up a ceramic bowl. There, she mixed something into the bowl. It was dusty and sparkly like spices. She turned to me and came towards me with the bowl in her hand.
I moved backward on the bed, but deep down I knew there was no escape from this. My eyes darted to the door. It was a bit far from where she was. I calculated my ability to reach the door, but the pain aching in my muscles wouldn't let me. It was impossible. And so I resigned to my fate.
The woman arrived at the bed, standing before me, her huge figure towering over me as she glared at me.
Here. Drink this,
she ordered, handing me the bowl.
I looked at it, reluctant to get it from her.
What is that?
I asked.
The woman rolled her eyes.
I don't have time for this,
she said before grabbing my hair.
She yanked at it and I yelled out in pain, my muscles crying out as I stretched them in an attempt to stop the pain. She held my chin with a firm grip opening my mouth. I tried to shut it but her hand was too strong.
Then, she poured the mixture into my mouth. When she was satisfied, she let go of my chin. The mixture was bitter and salty. I spat it out immediately but some had already gone down my throat.
How dare you?
She growled under her breath.
The woman looked agitated as the mixture splattered on her dress. Her eyes lit up in rage and she swung a hand at me. Her hand landed on my cheek, slapping me. My cheek stung in pain from the after of the slap.
My eyes became teary and I tried my best to hold back the tears that were forming. I pulled my mouth to scream, but her eyes lit up in surprise as she saw this.
Immediately, she sealed my mouth shut with her hand and stared at me in anger.
You better not scream or I will kill you. You got that?
The look in her eyes made me realize that she was dead serious. I nodded vigorously not wanting to dare her. She let go of my mouth and the tears trickled down my cheeks.
I hated feeling this way. Weak. I tried my best to destroy that feeling and yet this woman brought back that feeling in a jiffy.
She smiled at me, basking in my weakness.
You better not tell Dane about this…
she threatened.
The tears dried from my face immediately as I spotted a figure appear behind her. My eyes widened in shock as I recognized who it was.
If you do, I will….
She continued not realizing the figure behind her before it was too late.
You will do what?
Dane asked.
CHAPTER NINETY-TWO
Dane
I dropped the weight on the marble floor and sat back on the bench. My hands were trembling, and my skin was damp with sweat. My breathing was heavy as I stared at the marble floor. I was exhausted from lifting weights. It had been a while since I came to the gym. I needed to get my mind off her. That was why I was here.
But I gave up too soon. My muscles were crying out and aching in pain. They weren't used to this level of stress. My whole body was drenched with sweat as I sat on the bench. I was thinking. Thinking about her. She should have woken up by now. But I didn't want to go and see her. I was scared of being disappointed. Disappointed that she would still be unconscious.
It had been three days since the healer told me that she would see what she could do to help Lusia awaken her wolf. The concoction should be ready by now. The only thing left was for Lusia to wake up. But that seemed like a bigger task than I originally thought.
I picked up the towel that sat beside me and wiped my face gingerly. I was wearing a black tank top and a pair of black shorts. They were soaked with sweat. I was lucky that the gym had a shower where I could step in and freshen up. The morning was getting late. It was time for me to move and take care of other trivial tasks in the pack.
And with that, I rose from the bench, wiping the sweat off my neck and face once more. The towel was damp by the time I dumped it into the trash bin. I headed into the shower and stripped naked, dumping my clothes into the laundry basket that was there. The maids were going to see it when they cleaned the gym. That would be later in the afternoon.
I took a long shower and changed into another fit after that. A purple checked shirt and black pants. I rolled up the sleeves of the shirt and walked out of the gym.
As I strolled through the corridor of the east wing of the castle where the gym was located, I couldn't help but think about Lusia. Maybe it was best if I took a peek at her. Just to soothe the tension that was gathered in my chest.
I bit my lower lip as I tried to destroy that thought but I found myself succumbing to my desire as I walked through the thin hallway that led to the healer's room. I could feel my heart thumping hard against my chest as I prayed silently that she would be awake. I was tired of having to reminisce whenever I stared down at her motionless body. I was hoping that would change. I wanted to talk to her. My need for her had grown over the past days she had been out.
These past few days without her had made me realize that she was the only fun thing that kept me going in the castle. The castle was a dark and gloomy place with a morbid aura which ruined every bright mood I had. It was a terrible place to be. But Lusia had become that ray of sunshine that pierced through the gloomy skies. She was perfect to me.
As I approached the room, my ears caught the sound of muffled voices coming from the room. I furrowed my brows at this as I walked towards the room. As I arrived at the door, the voices grew louder. I could hear the voice of the healer. She sounded rude and irritated. I was surprised by that. But who was she talking to? Could it be?
My eyes widened in shock as I heard the next voice. It was soft and sweet. It was Lusia. She was awake. I moved to the door and found it half open. I peeped into the room.
In the room, Lusia was sitting on the bed and she looked so frightened. The lady was staring at her with a ceramic bowl in her hand. Her dress was stained with a greenish substance. I couldn't tell what it was.
Then, she did the most unexpected thing. She slapped Lusia. My heart sank in my chest as I watched this. That was a surprise. I never thought that she would do something like that to Lusia. Her next words stunned me.
You better not scream or I will kill you. You got that?
I was flabbergasted by that. Why would she say something like that? The rage was burning at my chest and I could feel my blood boiling as well. There was no way that she was getting out of this. I was going to make sure she paid for this.
I zoomed into the room and stood behind her, just as she said the next words.
If you do, I will….
I furrowed my brows at that.
You will do what?
I demanded.
Her body grew rigid before me. She turned around slowly and her eyes were lit up in shock. My eyes drifted to Lusia whose eyes were gleaming with tears. She had a waiting smile on her face when she saw me, and I winked at her. I spotted the bruise on her left cheek from the slap and that drove me crazy.
Your majesty. You're here,
the healer said, trying to act innocent, but I wasn't having any of that.
I grabbed her by the throat and squeezed it. She dropped to her knees immediately. Her eyes begged for mercy, but her throat couldn't speak those words because they were imprisoned by my fist.
How dare you?
I growled under my breath. You were supposed to take care of her.
The healer tried to speak but words couldn't form. I soon realized that I was still holding her neck and let go of it quickly before furrowing my brows at her.
Now tell me. What did you threaten her not to say to me?
I ordered.
The healer coughed and gasped for air before she spoke.
She refused to take the concoction I made for her. She spat it out on me and I hit her, telling her not to say anything to you because I knew you would be furious about this.
I chuckled as I listened to her. I could feel the fury burning in my chest. She was bold enough to lay a hand on Lusia but couldn't do anything when I was around. She was going to pay for this.
I used my neural link to call guards to the room.
You're going to pay for what you did,
I said.
I saw her trembling in fright.
Please. I'm sorry, Your Majesty. It won't happen again,
she begged.
I laughed out, my voice echoing through the room.
I will make sure that you won't.
CHAPTER NINETY-THREE
Dane
The door creaked open behind me and the guards walked into the room. I smiled as I stared at the healer. When her eyes drifted to the men behind me, she realized what was going on. I was going to lock her away and make sure that she paid for what she did to Lusia. There was nobody that was going to escape my wrath. I was the Lycan king. The king of this castle, and nobody had the right to touch what was mine.
The room went dead quiet except for the healer's shaky gasps as she knelt there, clutching her throat. My hands were still trembling from the rage coursing through me, and I could feel my pulse hammering in my ears.
The guards barged in, their boots thudding against the stone floor. I was infuriated that they had taken so long to get here, but it didn't matter now. It was soon going to be over. I was going to make sure that she suffered for what she did. The same way Kiara and Keon suffered.
Your majesty,
the guards greeted in unison behind me. You summoned us.
I pointed at the healer quickly, my voice coming out low and sharp, like a blade slicing through the tension.
Take her. Throw her in the dungeon, the far end. Put her in that hole dug into the floor and chain her to the iron bar above. She doesn't move until I say so.
Her head jerked up, eyes bulging with panic. She realized where she was going, and it wasn't going to be pleasant.
No, please!
she shrieked, scrambling toward me on her knees, her fingers scraping the floor. Your Majesty, I beg you. Please, show mercy! I didn't mean it, I swear!
Her voice cracked, and she grabbed at the edge of my shirt, but I stepped back, cold and unmoved.
I tilted my head, staring her down.
What do you take me for?
I spat, my words dripping with venom. Some idiot you can lie to? You said you'd help her, that your concoction would work. And what do I find? You were threatening her. You even hit her. How dare you?
I stood over her, my shadow swallowing her trembling form.
What am I to you? A king you can trick?
She froze, her mouth flapping like a fish out of water, no excuse left to spit out. Then the begging kicked up again, louder, desperate.
I'm sorry, I'm so sorry! It's my fault, all of it- I shouldn't have done it! Please, Your Majesty, I'll do anything!
Tears streaked her grimy face, but I was done listening.
My eyes were already on Lusia. She sat there on the bed, quiet, watching me with those wide eyes of hers. The bruise on her cheek stood out, a purple stain against her pale skin, and it twisted something deep in my chest.
