    Once upon a time there lived a king and queen who were happy in every way, except they had no child of their own. Though their castle was grand, their lands were vast, and they had riches beyond counting, their hearts longed for the sound of a child's laughter.

    The queen took solace in the natural beauty around her, and rambled often and far into the woods. Yet she could not help but wish all the while that she might have either a son or a daughter for her own.

    One day amongst the hazel trees she stumbled upon a hidden glade. At its centre, a small pond shimmered like a fallen star. The queen rested on a mossy-green rock, and gazed into the still water. How I wish you were mother to a child, sighed the queen to her reflection.

    Just then the sun sank and the moon rose, and the pond came alive with a chorus of tiny voices that trilled with throaty laughter. It was the frogs come out to play. The queen watched enchanted while they leapt about like champagne corks loosened in celebration. They somersaulted into the water, and bubbled up to the surface again. They played leap-frog across the lily pads, tumbling like emeralds in the moonlight. It was a pondful of vibrant joy.

    Oh, for a child bright and merry as a frog, exclaimed the queen. She stood to leave but her foot slid from her silver slipper which was gripped by the soft earth. Bending to retrieve her dainty shoe, she found a little frog sitting therein. The frog chirruped in its tiny bell-like voice, "Your wish is granted, fair queen. A boy-child you shall bear, one as bright and
