Elsewhere in the Ge-O Knight Multiverse…
Stealing the gold of a powerful prospector. Many could try, but most would fail to pull off such a stunt on their own. Now, what separates the others from Beau Buckley, is that he managed to do it entirely by accident.
Paladin Town was the kind of place you passed by once through the Mojave on your way to Nevada and once back again on your way home, but it had its residents. Notably, those who handled imports and Pony Express delivery work. Beau Buckley wasn’t typically one of those types, but on one unfortunate day, his boss was off sick with pox and Beau was the only one left to cover for him.
Nothing got to where it needed to be that day, including a fist-sized nugget of gold from the Reynolds Mining Company. Pony Express wasn’t the owner’s usual method of moving her spoils, but this particular nugget was on its way to a private investor. One that she kept under the radar.
Beau Buckley’s unbound impulse for snooping had him examining the nugget up close. With the midday sun bouncing off every protrusion and crevice, the man was enamoured. By quitting time, the town yack had forgotten to put the thing back in transit. He had absent-mindedly placed it down next to the apple on his boss’ desk, and without looking, grabbed for his apple, dropping it in his pocket and dashing out the door.
Days later, when word got to the Reynolds that their payment never arrived, the Company lost an investor that could have seen them unimaginable growth. The Company owner, Miss Richelle Reynolds, or Richie for short and sweet, hired her most trusted guns to investigate the cause of the nugget’s disappearance.
Beau wasn’t hard to track down. In fact, his boss ratted him out. Richie sent her men to deal with Mr. Buckley, but she decided to tag along down to Paladin Town; she wanted to see for herself the mastermind behind the gold nugget robbery. It would take her posse a short while to get to his residence, and when they did…
*Bam, bam, bam*
…
*Bam, bam, bam*
The man banging on Beau Buckley’s door with the back of his fist was growing impatient. He shouted Are you in there, Buckley? I know when yer shift starts, yer boss tow’d me.
…
*Bam bam bam bam bam bam bam* If you don’t answer, we’ll pluck that there horse o’ yers from her stable and sell ‘er to the highest bidder!
The door opened and a man of middle height, strawberry blonde hair and sun-bronzed skin stood in the frame. His clothes clearly needed a scrub, including his trusty leather mack that weighed down on his shoulders. How can I help ye, Gentlemen?
Don’t play coy! You stole a nugget from the ol’ Reynolds Company, where is it?
Buckley was concerned for them. Why, I don’t what you could be referrin’ to, Orificer. I’m certainly no thief, I make my own money. Speakin’ o’ which, I’ll be headin’ on down to work now.
He tried to push past the hired guns and tipped his hat to them. God willin’ ya find yer thief.
One man grabbed him by the shirt and instructed You stay still! Search his coat, boys.
Two of the five men fondled Buckley’s mack coat, but they didn’t need long. The one searching his left pocket found what they were looking for immediately and gripped his arm. You lyin’ little pig! It’s right here!
Pulling his hand out of the pocket, the sizeable nugget shone brightly in the morning sun.
Hey! … How’d my apple turn to gold?
The man stood by his door smiled, revealing a gold plated canine tooth. Looks to me like God willed it, Buckley.
Beau gulped a mighty gulp before licking his lips and positioning his tongue. With a hefty breath he whistled two times, the sound echoed through the breeze.
The man in charge of his right pocket asked What was that fer? Cawlin’ backup?
Beau did nothing but smile. In moments, the heavy clops of his horse became louder until she was present in all her glory. A peculiarly patterned lady, Marmalade’s fur was fresh and white underneath the golden ginger spots covering her whole body. She had ginger splodges surrounding her eyes like an outlaw’s mask for hiding themself.
The culprit turned his head up to his large friend, squinting as a sun beam shone by her head and hit him in the eye. Marmalade, clean up duty!
By command, the heroic mare collided heads with the hired gun holding the nugget. After that, he wasn’t holding it tightly anymore. As it often did with Beau, instinct took hold. He reached out and grabbed the tossed nugget. The man to his right reached for the prize. Gimme that, boy!
You fellers really got no manners, huh?
Beau fronted a confident quip as he pulled it away. Marmalade!
The horse responded to the call. She reared herself and came down on the man holding her owner’s arm. Now, Buckley was dim, but he knew when it was time to flee. Mounting Marmalade like an expert horseman, he kicked his stirrups on the old girl’s side and she got running.
The man by the door screamed GIT THAT THIEF!
The hired guns scrambled to mount their horses and pursue their target, and they caught up quick.
Beau Buckley wasn’t the most popular man in town, he knew if he found himself in The Silver Lasso the other locals would aid in his capture. He rode through town to the other side, just yonder the entrance. Where he was headed, they were a little less forgiving of law folk.
The Howling Coyote was for outlaws, crooks and any other misfit that found themselves travelling through Paladin Town. Bar fights were frequent, stand-offs and any other kind of ruckus were to be taken outside of the establishment, but that usually meant it’d just happen on the door step.
