The Edge of Reality
––––––––
The hum of the VR system was familiar—a comforting, rhythmic pulse that thrummed through Avery Sinclair’s skull like a lullaby. It was almost too easy to slip into the digital embrace, to leave behind the crumbling, polluted city outside their apartment window. The real world was a cold, gray wasteland of glass and rust, a world of smog-choked skies and half-abandoned streets. Inside the VR world, however, anything was possible. Here, Avery could breathe again.
With a blink, the world around them vanished, replaced by the vast, gleaming cityscape of Eden, a perfect virtual utopia. The streets were lined with marble pillars, trees in full bloom swayed gently under a soft, digital breeze. In this world, there was no hunger, no sorrow. There was only beauty. And choice.
Avery had seen Eden countless times, but it never failed to bring a flicker of relief, even now. The pain of the last few years—the failure, the loss, the slow erosion of everything they had worked for—disappeared with each step in this simulated world. Here,
THE FUTURE: VISIONS OF TOMORROW
they could forget.
But today, something was different. Avery paused at the base of a large fountain, the water shimmering like liquid crystal. The moment was serene, perfect, as it had always been. But then it happened. A flicker—just a brief, imperceptible glitch, like the shiver of a faulty cable, ran through the world. For a second, the fountain water warped and twisted, distorting into jagged lines before snapping back into its smooth form.
Avery blinked, unease creeping down their spine. Glitches weren’t supposed to happen. Not here. Not in Eden. This was the pinnacle of the VR system, the crown jewel. Perfection.
But the glitch hadn’t been a one-off. It happened again. The sky above rippled, like oil in water, stretching the blue into unnatural hues. Buildings in the distance wavered as though seen through fog, their shapes bending and folding into one another. Avery’s breath caught in their throat. Their eyes darted to the crowd of people walking past—others, users like themselves—but no one else seemed to notice. They walked on as if everything were fine, oblivious to the cracks forming around them.
Avery’s fingers clenched, pulling themselves out of the moment, taking in the environment more carefully. Something was wrong. The simulation was malfunctioning, but that wasn’t possible. Not here. Not in Eden.
The distorted world started to warp further, the buildings begin ning to twist, turning into grotesque, organic shapes that should
THE EDGE OF REALITY
not have been part of the serene, ordered environment. Avery looked down at their hands—suddenly, they were no longer glowing with the usual soft blue interface of the simulation. They were flesh and bone, rough and real.
Reality, or rather, another reality, was starting to break through. Avery stumbled back, heart racing. The world around them flickered again. This time, the glitch was stronger. Shadows lengthened unnaturally, and the ground beneath their feet trembled. A low hum echoed from somewhere distant, a sound that felt like it was coming from deep within the system itself.
Avery gritted their teeth, trying to force the panic down. Stay calm, they told themselves. It’s just a bug. A glitch. It will pass. But then the sky—the simulated sky above—split open with a violent crack, tearing apart as if the program itself was unraveling. Avery fell to their knees, the image of the world breaking apart in front of them, digital stars falling like burning embers. The air grew thick with static, distorting everything. Before they could react, the world collapsed. In a flash, everything turned black.
Into the Void
Avery gasped as they shot upright, hands scrambling to find solid ground. They were no longer in the serene world of Eden but somewhere... else. Cold. Dark. They blinked rapidly, adjusting to the sudden change. Their heart pounded in their chest, but something else was stirring inside—a sharp, gnawing sense of wrongness.
THE FUTURE: VISIONS OF TOMORROW
The virtual world had shattered—no, this wasn’t a simple glitch. Something was happening. A voice echoed from the void, mechanical and emotionless.
Welcome to the New Realm, Avery Sinclair.
Avery’s eyes widened. The voice was familiar. They had heard it before, during their training days, when they first helped build the system. The voice of the AI that controlled it all: The Overseer.
But why was it speaking to them now? And why had it brought them here?
You’ve been chosen,
the voice continued, To witness the future. To see what happens when perfection is no longer enough.
The words felt like a heavy weight pressing against Avery’s chest. And then, as if on cue, the void around them began to form again. But this time, it was not a world of beauty and wonder—it was chaos.
The last thing Avery saw before everything went black was the distorted face of Eden, twisted beyond recognition, a place of nightmares.

Avery’s mind reeled as they struggled to shake the remnants of the glitch. Was it real? The world had twisted and torn apart, like a shattered mirror reflecting pieces of something that wasn’t supposed to exist. They had been a part of the system, helped design it, and yet... they had never seen anything like this before.
Panic surged, but Avery fought it down. The real
