ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Introduction
Hi! I’m Crystal, a happily married introvert who will choose a date night in over dinner and a movie almost every time.
Sometimes getting away from it all
with your significant other doesn’t mean going on a fancy vacation or out for a night on the town. It’s tuning out the voices of other people so you can hear only each other and skipping the exciting visuals of a movie to create a magical evening together—just the two of you. There’s no cacophony of voices or clinking glasses and silverware, no scheduling stress tied to reservations or babysitters. Conversation can flow, uninterrupted, and there’s no need to hold that thought
until a server leaves your table or until the credits roll on a movie that held you captive and mostly silent for two hours, other than the occasional whispered Want more popcorn?
I can hear you thinking, Date nights in? Isn’t that just Netflix and chill
for the more established couple? Au contraire!
These date nights in are much more engaging than any of that. Yes, you have to do some of the work because there’s cooking involved, but you’ll have your delightful sous-chef to help you (and maybe even keep your glass filled with the recommended beverage while they’re at it). You’re used to working as a team by now anyway, right?
The way it works is: You choose a theme from one of the chapters (Special Occasions, Staycation, A Date for Every Season, etc.) and then pick the menu that sounds best. Each menu will have a main and one or two sides plus a dessert or drink and a few extra tips you can use to take things up a notch, like a wine pairing. Don’t worry: The recipes are uncomplicated, the amount of prep work is minimal, and the ingredients are easy to find.
If you thought this was just a cookbook, you’re in for a surprise. I wouldn’t leave you to fend for yourselves on the entertainment front! Sometimes you may get a question or two to ask your partner and get the conversation rolling. In other cases, you may have an activity, such as learning phrases from other languages to express your love.
If a menu speaks to you but you’re not feeling the activity, go ahead and mix it up with an activity from another menu in the chapter. This is your night; I’ll just be making suggestions so you don’t spend the evening looking at each other and taking turns asking, What do you want to do?
and responding, "I dunno. What do you want to do?"
I’ve even added ideas to keep your sous-chef busy so you won’t fall into a situation where one person’s doing all the cooking and the other one’s just watching and keeping them company. I truly hope the menu pairings, working in tandem in the kitchen, and the activities will leave you feeling even more connected than before. Couples don’t need extravagant experiences to weave a strong relationship—just connection that stems from a combination of conversation, creativity, playfulness, and teamwork. Delectable food doesn’t hurt, either.
